I've been thinking about happiness lately. And about what being happy in life really means.

When you're young,
they tell you that you can be anything you want to be when you grow up.
Most loving adults won't even laugh when children say things like "Pirate" or "Princess".
They just get this little "Sure, honey" look on their faces.

But somewhere along the lines, being happy stops mattering, and being successful takes it's place.
Most people start doing the things that will make everybody else happy, and ensure that they have safe but oftentimes boring lives.

And I think about the people that dared to break this chain, and how brave they were.
They are the people you remember for the next generation.

Look at people like Albert Einstein,  Pablo Picasso, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Galileo Galilei.
All of them where people that didn't exactly do the smart thing, the thing that everyone was supposed to be doing. As cheesy as this sounds, they dared to be different.

I really wonder which kind of person I'm going to be.

I think you'll be one of those who dared to be different.

  3. Have you read the book Eat, Pray Love? It's a great read in my personal opinion. I also suggest you read it before you see the motion picture.

In the book she (Elizabeth G.) talks about this, and it really makes you think.

    I agree with Melissa.
Obviously you are already thinking about it, being different.

Now you just need to act.

    Great post.

  4. Melissa:
Thanks. I sure hope I have the guts to do it.

    Brit: Sure, go ahead. Thanks.

Yerika: Did I ever mention how much I bloggin' love you? I've heard of it, and I think I'll read it now.
I always like reading before seeing the movie.
    I think you're different too.

  5. Actually, I choose not to be a person at all.

I choose not to be the everyday greedy, lying, thoughtless, destructive, hateful, person.

I choose to be more selfless, more honest, more thoughtful, more creative, and less hateful.

I choose to be more than the everyday person.

  6. I really needed to hear this post. Thank you.

And wonderful examples at the end...except maybe Colombus. From what I hear, he was kind of just a wealthy land-owner who chanced upon the New World and did nothing but oppress the natives there.

Did that sound bitter? Yes. Anyway, excellent post. Very insightful.

I love hearing things that aren't my own pathetic echoes.
